I was truly amazed by how much this compiler [HI-TECH C PRO for the PIC10/12/16 MCU Family] reduced the code size, over and above not only other manufacturers compilers, but over HiTech's other compilers. The hard work put in by HiTech's development team, and the achievements accomplished in writing such software, not only decreasing the code size but also increasing the compilers functionality, makes this the best compiler in the market. Thanks guys! Compiles without errors now... Reduced code usage by 7.1%... (Optimization is off) Don't need to use STATIC local variables no more... (It still looks like static ascii strings reduce usage though which is fine by me) Fixed another problem regarding some strange LCD characters... I program mostly in assembler and I have been using Hi-Tech for some weeks now. Compared to IC assembler, among other features, I found very helpful for assembly programming:

1. More complete syntax checking in general. Offsets high and low bytes, EQU definitions,etc. Really important!
2. More directives available like SET, PSECT, IRP, IRPC, etc.
3. Direct command line driver. Very useful for batch files.
4. Local labels inside macros.
5. Control of assembler operation. With IC there is NO control at all, at least in their documentation.
6. Native paging with indexed instructions tracking IDX_PP. Was the logic way to go from the beginning. It is the mode I always use and now don't have to add "SYSTEM_TOOLS=0" in the local.mk file. However, there are several lib and API routines that assume indexed instructions track STK_PP. They just don't work unless IDX_PP is set to STK_PP page previous to the call. I don't know if they have been modified for Hi-Tech compiler.

I have been using PICC about 7-8 years yet. I think PICC is a great compiler. I like it because of the tight code it produces and the good integration in MPLAB. Another good thing is the optimizations of the code. All this PIC bank switching is not easy stuff to deal with. Well, there were several cases when I found bugs in it or had other problems but was happy to hear your fast support responce. Regarding the time difference (I am in Eastern Europe) sometimes I received answers in hours. So, thank you again and keep on this way!

[John Payson's parity generator macro] It is unbelievable to see how both compilers (PICC and PIC18) are able to translate this cryptic C-expression into a single swapf instruction, even with the optimizer disabled! I think that this is worth an application note, or FAQ, from Hitech. This line should satisfy the most ferocious assembler-phobes. It could also be used to test other PIC compilers. Look at C18, for example, and feel good.

I am absolutely in love with the Hi-Tide IDE. I love the way you can simulate actual devices and test it right there. It saves me so much time in testing things, and I can even work while I'm in a plane or on a trip without having to lug around a ICE or ICD board.
